True Roma played betteras a team, but how many opportunities they had built up til Totti and Menez entered and how many after? I think it would be around the same.
The midfield problem was the same as with Ranieri, till Totti did not started to connect the two part of the team. Yet talking about Totti, Montella sounds just like Ranieri. Hogh praiss in words, sitting him on the bench.

As for Ancelotti, I would like him to arrive to Roma, but what is disturbing me, that in news sites it also connected with Pirlo.
And what that would mean for Totti? I mean why we need an old milanese player, when we have our old and better player?
Yet, for so many a 32 year old Pirlo fine, but not Totti. Very disappointing fan-behavior.

Re: Help me, Father.

What Tonto said.

If you good people here haven't read the Swiss Ramble's appraisal of Roma's commercial potential, you might want to take a look.

Not only is the club not in any real financial difficulty, but there's a plenty of scope for increasing revenue w/o resorting to the Red Sox/Arsenal method. That doesn't mean the new owners won't, but there's a ton of revenue to be had. Not by turning Roma in the Red Sox, though, but by just operating the club in a modern, professional manner.

And I'll happily settle for that. The fact that Roma isn't top of the Italian money league is testament to the Sensi's laughably inept management & nothing else. It's no wonder Italpetroli is bankrupt.

Probably the best model for what Roma should be is -- whisper it -- Bayern Munich. They have a huge & loyal fan base, productive youth system, & do well in Europe. Yet even though they have affordable tickets & the Bundesliga TV contract is dwarfed by the Premier League, Bayern is still brings in an extraordinary amount of money, which they pour back into the club. Put Uli Hoeneß in charge of Roma for a year so he can show the new owners how it's done.

Don't write off the "old" Roma just yet. There's definitely a way to make Roma a successful club w/o turning it into something unrecognizable.

Re: Help me, Father.

I see all your points...

But making money and building a quality team doesn't need to break the romance. A new stadium need not necessary result in skyrocketing ticket costs - it may just encourage more fans to come and watch.

Better marketting need not result in Roma looking like the money whores (alla Madrid). If 100,000 kids in China wants to wear a Menez shirt and that helps as fund a better squad, why should I mind...?!

Arsenal plays with a top quality squad. Has money. And produces beautiful football. But they don't follow the Inter, Juve, Milan, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, R Madrid, etc model we Romans despise.

Wouldn't it be nice to know that Roma could compete for the Scudetto every year. That we are almost guaranteed CL football yearly...

Wouldn't it be nice to know that the club wouldn't have to accept bid for our best talent... aka Aquiliani. That Vucinic isn't going anywhere... so that we could admire his pantless antics for years to come.

Roma doesn't need to sell its soul to the devil. But they do need to learn to compete smarter OFF THE PITCH.

A change might be for the better. If an American can bring some rational thinking to the emotion that is Roma, maybe its for the better.

Re: Help me, Father.

Unfortunatelly it's hard to maintain a good team like that, not only from the financial point of view.
The world is changing, the new generations of fans want victory and scudetto first and foremost, and the way is not important at
all. Only winners have a place in this world, La Magica means not much anymore without trofeas.

I I wish Roma could safe some of that "innosence" and passion for the game but its a very hard task. Fans today don't want to wait years and decades for another Scudetto, they want it now, and then every year.

Re: Help me, Father.

You've just said what's been in the back of my head for quite some time now... not the part about Red Sox alleigance, but the part about Roma becoming something... else.

I don't want Roma to be Juventus.
I don't want Roma to be A.C. I added that *I* wouldn't feel comfortable parting ways with him if that were the case.

But the rest of the Romaniste... wow. The majority of the people who responded said that they *would* still want him to leave.

I guess I'm saying this: despite the fact that you're both on-target in your assessment of Ranieri (I think, anyway), probably two-thirds of the Roma supporters out there wouldn't even give your points consideration. The anti-Ranieri crowd wants his head, and that's that.

It's cold and lonely in the Ranieri-toleration camp.

Re: A Point

I must disagree with you Chris. Ranieri should not play Russian Roulette with Roma. Sometimes it seems, he has fell in love with this idea of changing the game in the last 15 minutes because of the bayern match, then Catania etc.
But Roma also has lost points in the last 20 miuntes, let alone the Scudetto last year.
So far Roma had a lot of luck, would even say something close to the "luck of champions" but it was not used to take the team higher. The blows are coming way too quickly after a good period.
Ranieri is a very simphatic man, talks niceli and everything, but he did not won anything yet, and there is a reason for that.

And in you add, that this year our defence was the weakest point so far despite him being he lover of catanaccio, also says a lot about him. The team in my opinion was not prepered well, there is no timing in the form - as actually Roma still not in form - and too much things are accidental in their play, including wins and defeats.

Re: A Haiku for Simone Perrotta

Rules are broken for Simone Perrotta.

(A technicality, anyway.)

Re: A Haiku for Simone Perrotta

Hmmm... Luca Toni, what's not to love? The comments about the difficulties of getting a penalty in Rome were--IMO--not those of a man convinced of this cosmic injustice, but those of a man bitter at having just lost in the stadium where he wanted to remain. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here and move on (an effort helped greatly by having won the game, with his replacement averaging more or less a goal every other game and scoring again on the night). As for why I was fond of him in the first place, it's because I valued his presence last spring so much, he really swept me away. I was expecting much less than what he gave us, always a fine blueprint for success. I have no beef with the fact that we have Borriello instead of him though, I think Roma is better for it.

I'm pretty bleh about Aquilani, too (indifferent, not angry or upset), but you have to understand Alberto was chris' hope for a brighter future. It's traumatic to lose players like that.
